'94 E320 wagon sunroof problem

We just bought a real nice 1994 E320 wagon.(My first GAS MBZ) the sunroof works on the vent-up side where the back raises only. When I try to make it slide back, it only opens up about 4 to 5 inches and stops. It seems to me that it is jaming against something. Anyone with any ideas???

What you need to do is clean and lube (probably several times) using the special sunroof lube. If you search you'll find the steps. If it's moving at all the motor and cable are working it's just stuck on gunk. If you burn out the motor or break the cable it's expensive to fix.

Michael, The slider moves freely.... It just goes so far and seems to hit a mechanical stop. Fortunately my wife doesn't use the sunroof. Our '84 300TDT had that wonderful non-electric hand operated sunroof. I personally HATE sunroofs from a mechaics point of view for just this reason. They gum up, leak and cause a guy extra maintenance. I just like to have EVERYTHING working properly.

Mine did the exact same thing as yours. It worked perfectly for years and then one day would only open half way. What I did was lube the rails on the part that would open. Then close and reopen several times but only as far as it will easily open (and close). Then open, clean, and lube again. Do those steps several times cleaning out the newly dirtied up lube each time. Keep working it open more and more each time and you'll have it. Also look back into the whole assembly and make sure nothing is blocking it.

Only use the Mercedes sunroof lube. The large cans are pretty expensive so search the forum and find the members who have sold small amounts to other members in the past. Maybe they still have some.
Good Luck, Dan
