Problems specific to 1992 400SE
Hello all,
I know of all the W140 common problems, but it seems some of them affect only certain engines & model years. Which problems should I be concerned with on a '92 400SE? Car is a one-owner and he says he's never done any of this stuff... he recalls the most expensive repair being an ignition coil, so I'm sure he'd remember a multi-thousand $ repair! Evaporator: He says it's never been done but the A/C works fine (I assume this is a definate problem area on this car and will need to be changed) Wiring harness: Have read on this forum that it affects 93-95 model years. Problem for '92 models also???? Bose amp: He says radio works. Assume this is a problem area and will need to be changed at some point. Door vacuum pump: He says this works fine. Assume this will need to be replaced also. Head gasket: Seems to apply only to the 300SEL/S320 models. 400SE/S420 seems to be much more bulletproof and there is NO headgasket issue. Correct? I know the evap is a problem, but are the Bose amps and door vacuum pumps a problem across ALL model years? Seems odd that a car with 95,000 miles and is 14 years old has NEVER head an evap problem/bose amp/wiring harness/locking pump replaced?!? I'm hoping I'm not going to be the sucker stuck replacing all that stuff! Is it possible that maybe those things will never go bad since they've lasted this long??(I know, I'm dreaming... but am I?) Needless to say, I will be having my mechanic (former MB dealership tech) check over the car, especially these items. Helps that he had a W140 and knows them inside out! |
