I cannot figure out how to remove the instrument panel from the dashboard so that I can replace a broken odometer on my 1987 300E. I have done this before on BMWs and Saabs but I cannot figure out how to get the instrument panel out of the Mercedes... not even a clue as to where to begin to open the dash. Can someone send me a relavent page or two from a shop manual for the 300E? Chassis 124.030? Or explain how to remove the instrument panel?

You're supposed to use special hooks that slide in-between the panel and the dash and just pull it out. What I like to do if I don't have them (your case) is to remove the speaker cover and speaker form the dash. Then simply stick your hand behind the cluster and push out.
The older clusters have many wires and light bulbs. Make sure to write them all down. They should be numbered but the numbers usually fall off. Especially if the cluster has been removed before.
When removing speedo you'll need to loosen the brown panel in the back (2 screws like the ones for speedo)that holds the fuel, temp, etc. It's just to give you enough clearance to remove speedo and reset linkage.

Removing the speaker is a pretty easy way to get out the instrument panel. If you have never removed the speakers before, read the "Stereo removal" article under the DIY tab above, as speaker removal and grill removal is not real obvious.

Also, do a search on instrument cluster removal - there are some tips and things to watch out for (speedo cable) that have been discussed over the last 2 years on the forum, as well as means of removing the instrument cluster without taking out the speakers by making your own hooks.

Just finished reading John's post and forgot to tell you to watch out when pulling out cluster. The first thing you want to do is to get enough clearance for your hand to unscrew cable. Do not pull out too much becasue you might strech out the cable and then your speedo needle might start jumping at low speeds.

You can gain a little extra room by disconnecting the speedo cable from the tranny first. You can them pull the cluster out further without fear of damaging the cable.

Make your own hook by taking a coat hanger, bending one end at a 135 degree angle - cut it so it is about 3/8-1/2" long, leaving a sharp edge. The rest of it should be about 6 inches long, with a comfortable loop for your hand. Insert it at about 1 inch below the top on the left side, then rotate it so the hook is toward the instrument, then gently pull until the instrument panel just starts to come out, then remove the hook and do the same thing on the other side. To replace, just gently push it back in. Follow the other members good advice about being gentle and labeling everything.
