Recently the dashboard light on the left side of the speedometer on my 1995 C280 went out and I thought the bulb needed replacement. Before I could get it in for servicing, the light came back on. Since then the bulb has gone off and come on again several times. Now, the bulb on the right side of the speedometer has started the same thing sometimes coming on sometimes going out. It never does this while the car is running, it is always just a guess whenever you start the car whether the bulb to the left of the speedometer will light, the right one will light, both will light or neither will light. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a common ground point that may have loosened or corroded?

I had the EXACT same problem on my 1995 C280 awhile back. I think it was the right side (maybe the left side) of my speedometer (lights) would not turn on. Well I would start the car, drive for a little while, then they would turn on. Or I could smack the dash, then they would also go on. Anyway, this happened probably 10 times, but has not occurred again in months... Seems to have gone away. Maybe a loose bulb or something? I have a loose connection in my left side parking lamp on the rear (the inside one of the two), it sometimes fails to work for minutes on end (I know because of light indicator in dash, but will work again and not come back for weeks or a month)... Strange....

Robert,
The mentioned dash light problem (on-off-on) is quiet common. Have all the dash cluster bulbs (4) renewed during the next service (whether they function properly or not during the service). The bulbs are definitely worn; it is (most likely) not a ground problem. greetingz,

I don't know how much the US shops will charge you for this. The better car shops have OEM hooks to get the dash cluster out (that will only take a minute or two when the cluster is willing to be taken out) and bulbs can be replaced. Total costs will be 4 bulbs and 15min work...
