I am trying to replace the signal/windshield wiper switch in my 1986 300E. I have gotten as far as removing the airbag. I couldn't get the steering wheel off though. Do I need to use a steering wheel puller or anything like that?

If you have removed the big retainer screw in the middle of the wheel and the wheel will not budge, you will have to use a puller.

If you have removed the large center bolt, grab the wheel and wiggle and pull real hard. It will come off. All of the parts are strong, so don't be too worried about damaging anything. You also could try a little penetrating oil, like PB Blaster.

Wiggling and yanking aren't the preferred methods for removing steering wheels. A proper puller is only about $25 and puts the force on the hub where it belongs. A tight steering wheel will come off with a loud crack after the hub lets go, so there is often much more holding the wheel on than you would want to overcome by applying force to the rim.

I would always use a puller on my other cars, for fear of bending the steering wheel.

I would use one on the benz, you don't want to damage anything, and cost is minimal.

re:300E steering wheel removal

Thanks everyone for the replys. I haven't gotten past the countersunk screw. I did break a socket trying to remove it though. I guess once that comes off I'll be ok..

Wiggling and yanking may not work. I once broke a cheap wheel puller (on an old GM car). The wheel was very tight.
