96' e320 210 switchover valve, upshift delay

I had a check engine yesterday when i brought the car for a tire mount and balance,Is that a coincedence(sp?)Did they pull something from underneath the car?Anyway I scanned the car and got a P1700 code which is switchover valve,I want to diagnose this by myself but i don't know where the switchover valve is located on w210 chassis specifically 96' model.

P1 700 means that the car isn't staying in gear long enough durning a COLD operation of the engine..takes 2 consective days for that fault to appear.

Vacuum leaks are the most common problem..

Where's the switchover valve located on this chassis?i know on 95' c280 its behind the brake booster

99% of the time the problem ISN'T the switch-over valve but a loss of supply OR leakage in the element that is part of the cable..

The switch-over valve is mounted to the left inner apron..next to the purge valve.

Doc,
If the vacuum leak is in the element,Is this the part that needs to be replace(I attached pic)?Could you give me a ballpark on how many hours it should take to replace it and where is it located on transmiision side, left(driver side) or right?

mbdoc 04-05-2006 08:09 AM

At dealer...replacement of that cable runs 2.5-3 hrs. Yes that is the part that fails MOST often.

Located on the right front of the transmission near the bell housing. USE vacuum pump to check for leak..

Thanks.Appreciate your help.

Doc,
When removing the vacuum element does it require draining the transmisision oil?I asked because my car is only due for trans. oil change.I don't want to do the trans. oil now and later on i need to dranin it again in replacing the vac. element.
