Just a thought. Would it be difficult to put a 5 liter M119 into a 400E? Would the swap require much more than the bigger displacement engine and a controller unit or two? I realize a real 500E has suspension, brake, diff and interior upgrades.

Thanks,
Sixto

JS,

Maybe I'm misinformed. My buyer's guide says that the 400E has an M119 engine. So I presumed the 400E had an M119 of smaller displacement than the M119 in the 500E, suggesting that any mechanical differences would be internal to the block. Kind of like the 2.6 and 3.0 liter M103s. Thinking about it further, the 4.2 liter engine in the 400E might be an M116. But I highly doubt the M116 would have lasted long enough to make it through the first year of W210 production.

I'm very confused. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. But you're right. The price difference between a 400E and a 500E these days doesn't warrant that big a headache.

And 40hp would be greatly appreciated in my M103, but probably less so in a 275hp M11_ 400E engine.

Thanks,
Sixto

All of the 1993 & later M119 engines with EFI are the same dimensions, the innards are different! Should be able to swap w/o any real problems!! The 400E was a LEXUS fighter & came to US / Japan only. Beefed-up tunnel & suspension could withstand the extra HP. Have fun. Bet a 5 liter M119 motor will cost $6000 to $8000, from bone yard!!
The 400E/E420 had a M119.975 & the 500E/E500 had a M119.974.

Just depends on the traction system that's on the 400E, wether or not the wiring or throttle actuator would need to be changed. The trans is as strong as the one in the 5 liter cars.
