Greetings,

I had asked before and got a response, but my inbox dumped on me. Does anyone know where I can get a drip tube to time my injection pump on my diesel? Megaparts needs a number to locate one. I am not particular where it comes from, but really need one to check timing. PLEASE

Charles

Charles,
Glad to hear you are getting a drip tube to time your injection pump. I think this is the easiest and most accurate way to do the job. I've used this method for the past 34 years with very good results. I made my own drip tube from an old injection line. That way I wound up with two drip tubes. Good luck.

Maybe You can help

Greetings Bill,

I had recieved a response on another post about injection timing and the person said the following.

The "dreaded drip tube" method in the manual calls for one second per drip. In fact, the ideal is 19 second per drip. M-B mechanics are trained to target at 10 seconds per drip up to as close to 19 as possible. If this sound like a lot of difference is isn't all that much, really. Also, be sure you do not have much timing chain stretch. No more than 5 degrees off spec. If the car has much over 100K miles, it is wise to change the chain and tensioner. After I did the foregoing and adjusted the valves, my 1977 240D with 170K miles ran like a top, faster, and much quieter.

Can this be right? The manual says one drip per second and I see this post that says this. I'd think there would be some difference if it were set this way. Any input as usual is appreciated.

Charles

Charles,
The factory Service Manual for Engines 615,616,617.91 states "Rotate crankshaft in direction of rotation until fuel at overflow pipe just stop dripping. One drop should follow after approx. 3 seconds."

Under fueled or over fueled

Greetings,

Hate to be a pain in the back side, but with cyl. no.1 at TDC shouldn't the fuel flow drop to one drop per second, and if it doesn't the pump must be rotated to achieve the flow? If the engine is being overfueled or under fueled, what would the performance or other results show?

Thanks,

Charles

Charles,
The diesel engine is properly timed at 24 degrees before top dead center and with the drip tube one drop should follow after approx. 3 seconds (Factory Service Manual Engines 615,617,617.91-page 07.1.4-115/2.
