thanks for the thought. but he is a pretty nice guy. he had employment issues and got a divorce and it sat at his exes house, etc etc etc. just had too many other little life battles to care enough.

but he did get it back to me and for that i appreciate it.

i think i can get a good usable car out of it that will be pretty fun to scoot around in.

so today i cleaned the rest of the pistons. then my favorite machinist cleaned the block and did a light hone. the worst of the rust pitting is not very bad and it is more than 2" down from the top of the cylinder in an area that should not compromise the combustion process much since it is where the stroke is pretty well done.

so he is going to ream the ridge, hone it a bit better and we will install new iron rings, do a good valve job install, new valve seals, and replace any guides and valves that might be bad (i doubt that they will need any valves) and install all new gaskets and seals a new clutch and go for it.

i surveyed the body on sunday and found that the rust is pretty repairable and not in any structural areas.

progress report

so he has the short block assembled. they honed the cylinders and they look really good. the crank and bearings were tip top. now for the head.

we are thinking that the 143k showing is probably about right. a fellow who had worked at j franks when this car was being used as a parts chaser thought it had a lot more miles than what is showing but it looks now like it is probably pretty close based on the condition of the engine.

in looking at the bottom end of this motor i was very impressed with the compactness of it. the rod throws have very little extra room. and it is all so compactly done that a part of the #1 cyl crank throw weighting is removable because it is so compactly built that it cannot be milled enough to be balanced without this weight that bolts on the inside of the throw. to install the rod and piston, you have to have the crank throw all the way up to get the rod in and all the way down to tighten the bolts!

i never would have guessed it would be that compact. especially from looking at the massive head and valve covers all these years.

just a very high quality motor all the way around! no wonder the mercedes mechanics call it bulletproof!

the only thing i have looked at the bottom end of that looks higher quality is a ferrari 250 from 1959. course that is a whole different price category and a motor built to run 24 hour races.

Sounds like it's coming together well. I know the ports are already large on that head but is it going to be polished... to remove casting flash that's around the valve throats, chambers, etc.

Too bad the Euro 280E here I almost purchased was so rusted out. It was coming through the repaint. It was a four speed car with right around 100K miles only.

if it was cheap, well, the hi compression pistons for my engine were about $1,600. dont know about the cams. i assume they are different but dont really know for sure.

the distributor too and the exhaust manifolds.

I think it was 2k? I know where another M110 Euro is at, it's about $200 if I go pull it. But I have no need or use for it.
