560 Mobil Oil weight
 

I'm finding it harder and harder to find 15w50 Mobil1 Synthetic (not the 15,000 mile stuff) for my 560SEL.

Are there any other wieghts of oil which work well with the V8? Any preferences? Oh, I'm in Denver if the elevation/climate should weigh into my decision.

I went with 15w50 since 20w50 was specified in the manual.

The newly re-named Mobil 1 5W-40 "Turbo Diesel Truck." It's the new face of the 5W-40 Truck & SUV, and should be showing up in local stores this month, hopefully in 5 quart jugs at wallyworld.

***Yikes, I just looked at the Mobil 1 oil selector on the website because it used to tell you to use 5W-40 T&SUV and then for a while it said no suitable oil was available... but now it says to use 0W-30 --- what a mess that would be. :eek:

Been using 0w30 in my SEC for about 4 years no problems at all.

CzarFC, try Wal-Mart. In southeastern PA they sell Mobil 1 15W50 in 5 quart containers. Recommend staying with that weight oil in that vintage engine. Refer to the "Recommended Engine Oils" chart in your Owner's Manual.

I would just use 0w-40 in all temps.

The 0w40 is the good stuff. Should be fine for Denver. Actually 15w50 is rather thick for most of the year in Denver.

I am using 15-40 rotella. this oil should be good for you, well I am very happy with the oil.

Everyone says oil is a complicated issue, it's not. use what ever weight your owner's manual says to use based on anticipated temps. It is that simple. If memory serves me right, the difference between 15W-50 and 20W-50 is obvioulsy how well it works at the low temps. My 380SL's owner's manual says to use either 15W-40 or 15W-50. I think 20W-50 was for temps only down to 20 F. Just to further illustrate that it's the temps. that dictate what weight to use, not the type of oil I will quote the owner's manual for my 911. "Engine Oils- petroleum based and/or synthetic based" below this heading is the temp chart. There is no difference in weights based on oil type, just the temp. I point this out to show that the real simple answer to the always debated question about what oil to use is simply what temp. range are you going to be operating the car.

Aha! So thats why I couldn't find it at Walmart! Damn good oil, I guess they are putting the word Diesel on it to discourage gasoliners from buying it! The minute they put it on the shelves it was gone. I use it instead of the 15w-50 too.
