Have a 1981 300D with a torn axle boot. Is it important to change right away? Can the car be driven very long with this condition? What is easier, changing the boot or the axle? Saw a mechanic change the boot once and it looked very difficult trying to stretch the boot over the funnel device onto the axle. In fact, a couple of boots ripped trying to stretch them over the large part of the axle.

It is my feeling (and techs please correct me if I am wrong) that if the boot is torn and there has been no leakage of grease then just replace the boot. If the grease has started to leak then you have let the boot run bad for too long. If it is making the clicking noise them replace the 1/2 shaft.

Can 1/2 shafts be rebuilt or is it better just to replace it with a rebuilt unit?
My wifes CRV had a boot come loose and I caught it when the grease had just started to sling out. I just put a hose clamp over the existing loose clamp and let it ride.

My 300D is going to need some attention in this area when I get out of the engine compartment.

Due to design of the axle on the EARLY Benzes, it's better to get a reman axle or new one. Replacing the boot on a 1980 car requires several $$$ special tools. Most Dealers won't have the needed tools to do the boot only!

As far as parts. I have =found the axle at Advance auto parts for $110.00 and another mercedes parts shop has an axle for $275. Is there going to be a big difference between the two? Thanks. Rob Thomas

Also, do you have an idea about how many shop hours would have to be req'd to do that job? (I hope it is okay to ask this question) My boots are not leaking but do look sort of warn and on the verge of cracking... I would like to replace the axles when I change my brakes and tires... get it all out of the way at the same time. :)

Does anyone know the various pros and cons of rebuilt versus new axle assemblies? I'm glad to see this thread as my 300SD boots are developing cracks in the rubber.

I just replaced both half axles with rebuilds from FastLane at $200 each. My car has 138k miles and had a bothersome vibration under tourque load. The new axles have made a significant difference in the ride of my car and was money well spent. Before doing this I spent a good bit of money on other drivetrain parts with little impact on the vibration. Only question I have is whether I should have bitten the bullet and purchased new half axles instead of the rebuilt ones.
