Cheapest place to buy Tranny Fluid for my '97 E420 eith 722.6?
Just got quotes from $17-26 per liter for the tranny fluid from the local dealers and $90-107 for the dipstick tool. Is there a cheaper place to get these? Can I use some other synthetic from Red Line/Mobile 1? I checked on Mercedes Shop and they do not list the fluid and don't have the dipstick tool in stock. Thanks

Here's your dipstick - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-722-6-Transmission-Fluid-Dipstick-Repair-Tool_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35625QQitemZ4631006626. Just bought one from them - good service and the best price I could find.
Try these guys for your ATF - www.importec.com, although I see many of the World Pac guys say it is temporarily unavailable. Give them a call. I think it was $12 or so when I bought some a month ago. Also, look here http://www.***************/search/productx.aspx?sid=2n5vss45p1t3ybzmynwo2045&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1376175@E300D&year=1999&ci d=98@Fluids%20%26%20Chemicals&gid=2222@Miscellaneous%20Fluids/Treatments Len |

Steve, dealers are using the 722.9 fluid to "help" 722.6 unusual (poor) shift qualities
This info is from 722.9 training pdf from www.mercedestechstore.com |
Phil has the dipstick tool for around $37, IIRC. Also, don't forget your red locking clips.
|
Actually Phil just e-mailed me back and he does have the tool and fluid. The fluid seems like a steal at $9.75 per liter.

On a similar note, does anyone know what "non-conductive" transmission fluid is? |

Should be for a liter and according to the training manual noted the fluid works in all MB trans 722.3, .4, .5, .6 and .9
Just went back to confirm the .5 tranny and it does say a liter. Check page #9: http://www.mercedestechstore.com/pdfs/286_722.9/286%20HO%20722.9%20062504.pdf |
That's a great pdf on the 722.9. Got one like it for the 722.6?
Thanks. Len |
Thanks Steve,
So the correct part number is A001 989 45 03 10. My '00 E430 is 6 years old and 73k miles, it is time to change the transmission fluid. |
Just read on another forum that the transmission oil is ATF+4 used by Chrysler.... ATF+4 is what is used in Chrysler cars that use the 722.6 transmission.... Does that make sense to anyone else?
|
Also, which Mercedes fluid should I use for the 722.6
I still have 5-6 bottles of the 722.6 fluid from 3 years ago. Should I add more 722.6 fluid or the new 722.6/722.9 fluid? If the latter, are they compatible? |
MBUSA is against the new oil
The dealer refused to sell me the oil, and the tech at 1-800-FOR-MERC said "Nein, nein!" when asked about using the 45 03 10 (7-speed 722.9) oil in the 722.6
Any idea why? Has MBUSA learned that it's not backwards compatible? |
