560sl Fuel Relay

I bought a new fuel relay for my 560sl hoping it would cure my stalling problem. I pulled the glovebox and looked in with a flashlight and notice 3 relays that look like they could be the fuel relay-two are side by side next to the firewall and one is in front of the drivers side of the first pair. I pulled the one by itself and it said Idle Control on the side so that ain't it. Pulled the other two and the one on the passengers side had different pins also so that ain't it. The third one one was close except it had an extra pin (10 to the original 9). Try as I could the 10 pin would not go in the 9 pin harness. This is a KAE (Kaehler automotive) relay so I looked on their website and it said I had the correct relay.

Short of cutting the extra "toe" off, any clues? Am I even in the right place looking for the relay? I'm clueless and PO'd.

Thanks.

JB

JB:

I do not know what yr. your 560SL is. Out of curiosity, I looked up the FPR here for an '87 model.

The URL below shows 2 different FPRs - one is 10 pin; the other has fewer pins. I wonder if you were sold the correct FPR?

That's weird.

I looked at the link you sent, mine isn't either of those-the original has 9 pins, the replacement I bought has 10 pins but
the no decel version has like 5 pins or something. The original has part number 002-545 16 05 on the top. Is this a correct part? Mine is an 86 by the way.

Thanks.

I went back to "Buy Parts" and keyed in -> 002 545 16 05

This comes up - 10 pin

It may be that the 10 pin is a replacement for the 9 pin? I had to replace the headlight switch on my MB 126 some years back. The pin count was different, but it worked. In your case I cannot say.

I'll try again tomorrow.

You need long arms and small hands to get to this stuff. I tried for a minute or two to get the 10 pin lined up and installed but it didn't seem to want to go in. Of course if you could see in there better it would help.

Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks Mike, I owe you a cold one.

After getting juiced from watching 24 I told my wife, I'll be back and grabbed the new relay with a strangle hold determined to force it in. Took me about 10 mins and about the time I was ready to give up, I twisted my tongue just so and pressed down-voila, it went in just like "butta" as they say.

I quickly inserted the key and twisted just short of crank and heard the sweet sound of the pump humming. Until now, I could hear the hum a time or two then it would quit, causing the no start. My test twists, 10, 12 times all good "hum."

OK, now it starts. Still runs like crap but that's a story for another day.

Thanks.
JB
