help

so how do I clean the ics plate again?

found another problem:
part# on my idle control unit is: 002 545 07 32
according to the dealer it should be: 002 545 01 32

So what does that mean is that mine an older model?? or something? The part idle control valve has a stamp made in Germany and the label is worn off by the clamp the only thing I see is 408.202.001/003.

Does any one have a spare idle control unit that I can borrow to test so that I do not waste $300 bucks if thats not the problem?

I do not even know how to remove mine.... I guess thats why I have not attempted removing it yet. I think I will take it to the shop and have it checked, because we are going on vacation on June 17th ish'. Thinking of taking the Benz if I get it in dependable working order, but I am leaning more toward taking the Pontiac Safari wagon - more room, but geez, its so S L O W ! :P

Finally Fixed Thanks To All

Greetings,
I redid my vacuum lines again, since when I was replacing the thermostat everything was in the way. Found that the warm up compensator was mounted by only one bolt in the wrong place, when I mounted it correctly the car ran a lot better while cold. The new idle control unit solved the stalling problem and brought the idle down to about ~700, however the car was idling poorly so I was spraying wd40 around and found that the two hoses that come to the idle control valve fit loosely so I put clamps on them and the car idled a lot better. Now it shifts good, the whole car doesn't jerk when I put it into d or r. Also the cruise started working (not sure if that's because of the vacuum lines or something else). So now it drives cherry. Thank you all.

Guess it helps if the right part is in the car, and other parts are mounted correctly.

I am a little confused, you don't know how to remove which part? the idle control unit? My connection was loose on the idle control unit you might check that on yours and see if it's loose.

Thanks for that tip! Yeah, I was referring to the idle control. My car still has the "SSS" problem. I can be at a traffic light, stopped and it will stall without warning. It always starts right back up, but sometimes not before stalling again when I place it in gear. Somedays its fine. It stalled on Friday, I did not drive it Saturday and I drove it 100 miles today and it did not stall. I am at a crossroads with this car.

I will check that connection though.

I can e-mail you a picture of mine, but the attached link will take you to autopartswarehouse which has a picture of your idle control valve:
http://replacement.***********************/parts/autopartswarehouse/wizard.jsp?year=1986&make=MB&model=560-SL-001&category=All&part=Idle%20Control%20Valve&dp=true

the idle control unit is located above the passenger foot compartment, in my case it's 2 screws that hold a box, the box has a good size plug that comes in from the bottom. If you need more help I can look it up in my manuaul and e-mail you some testing procedures.

But verify the connections first, locate the idle control valve and test it the way dkuervo reccomended (it located in the center of the engine right above the thermostat housing). Has 2 big lines going into it and one electrical plug.

is the idle control unit

i have a 1983 w126 3.8 and it would do the same die at idle or run ok for a few minutes then die when the a/c was turned on. i went to a local junk yard and was able to find 2 one from a 560 and one from a 500 they are the same as long as it states the V8 unit.
it now runs like a dream.. the unit is located right behind the engine firewall on top by the hood is held down by a 10mm nut the other side slides in.

it states 'IDLE CONTOL UNIT' right on the box, ebay is the cheapest way to go too...but i paid 10 bucks for both of mine. and keep one in the trunk just in case.
