check engine?!?!

hey guys, apart from regular maint and doing the head gasket on this car, I'm still a mb newbie. while driving a very long distance today, I got a check engine light while up in the mountains in the middle of nowhere. the car drove and made it back like a champ though. I was slightly worried about being stranded and being attacked by wolves:rolleyes: really!

I did a search and found some posts about later 124 models ailing from the same light. none mentioned how I should pull a code. the vehicle is a 88 300e, hence my name. how do I pull a code on this vehicle?? I read about a black box with a switch and led. press for 2-4 seconds and then what happens? please verify. obd2 and scan tools have spoiled me and made me ignorant. I thank you in advance, I need to get this solved so I can drive with confidence.

you can go to autozone and have them pull out the bad codes for you...it's next to the battery, the black box, underneath is the button...

no pun intended

I prefer to stay out of autozone. ok so I push the button and count how many times the led blinks? thats it? thanks for responding.

wait

I need to purchase equipment for this?
install on-off readout ratio tester? connect impluse counter? if I do, that just sucks.

allright

I found the port. held the button down for 2-3 seconds and #4led blinked 8 times. thats it. I will try and search around. if you know what this means, please inform me. thanks. I will check in the link posted above but those codes are listed as 90 and above. mine is a 88. would they be the same codes?

nevermind

it was the altitude capsule. I just called my buddy's shop to get advice. very helpful and time saving to say the least. how many of you guys would pay $5 to get immediate advice from a mercedes pro over the phone? he always helps me out but I feel he should be getting paid for his time. CASE CLOSED! I'm worry free, for now anyways.:D

Congratulations on finding the problem & having a buddy like that.
Btw. if you look at the 1990-93 codes,( in the link provided by Arthur ), # 8 has the correct description of your problem.
May want to bookmark that link. ;)

thanks arthur

yea I read it, I was unsure whether the codes would be the same since it said 90-91 190 and 300 series and mine was a couple of years older. page was bookmarked, thanks for all your help fellas. I gotta send the guys at modern specialist a pie or something. they have been my saviors in many a situations with the 944 and now the 300. I owe them some gratitude.

Yours codes are the same as the chart because you have early California Emmissions.
Federal Emmissions dd not start til the chart date...
Any chassis with a built-in Led/Sw and a CE lamp is Cal before '90
