power window failure 1984 500sel

The driver's side front and back windows do not budge. I was told by the PO that it was "probably the switch", so I replaced it and nada. The fuses look good (although they control front right and back left, not the same sides), and both motors wouldn't crap out at the same time, would they? I'm at a loss here. Anyone have a suggestion as to where to look next?

thanks,
Jason

Answer

Best guess:

#1. Broken wires
#2. Bad motors

Have a great day.

Thanks for the reply. How would you suggest I track down broken wires?

Test for power and ground at the motor.

is there evidence of the motor trying to move them? the windows could be "glued" in place by some kind of sap or somethning.

if that were the case you might be able to free them by running a butter knife between the seal and the glass.

Sorry to hear about your window issues. Are both of the back ones out? I would go ahead and replace the fuses anyway, because I have heard that even though they look good, that they can still be bad. Hopefully this is the culprit with your LF and RR window. I do not think it would be broken wiring, especially since both stopped working, but I suppose it is possible.

Until the other day, my RF and LR windows were not working. I knew it could be the fuse, but I never got around to checking it until last week. Sure enough, it was the fuse. I installed a new one and the windows started working- well, at least the RF window. The LR one rolled down a little, but would not go back up.. It was like something was catching. I was able to push it back up manually, then used the switch, then it secured it back in place. I am assuming something is wrong with that window mechanism. :uhoh:. At least I still have three windows operating properly (for now):D, so I am not too concerned (for now).

Good luck. Let us know if you find out what it is.

No, there's no evidence of the motor doing anything. The driver's side windows just don't budge. I am assuming the fuses control windows on opposite sides, so I don't think it could be a fuse.

Here's the weird part: I removed the center console and looked at the wires under each window switch. The rear connector to the passenger side switch had 4 wires running out of it, and the driver's side only had 3. Is that even normal?

Oh well, it could be worse. At least they're not stuck in the down position.

That is bizarre......
