BAS/ESP & ABS Fault Indicator lights up

Hi

My E240 2001 BAS/ESP & ABS came on yesterday whilst I was driving. The 2 indicator came on at the same time. But each time I turn off the engine & restart the 2 fault indicators dont come on till I depress the brake pedal.

Checking my service record, on 15/07/05, the Front Brake Pad, Brake Disc and Brake Fluid had been replaced.

Can some pls help diagnose this fault? Prviously I had these kind of fault indicator lights up when I unplug & plug back the battery under the back passenger seats.

Kind Regards,

Perhaps a faulty brake light switch. Do your brake lights work?

Where is the faulty brake light switch? Where is it located?

You dont mean the brake light itself?

I had a similar problem on my ML320. It turned out to be a fault brake light switch. The dealer replaced it under warranty, so I don't know much more than that. "A known problem on the ML's" I was told by the dealer.

When the brake light switch went out the sypmtoms were the same as you described. When I started the vehicle, the BAS/ESP lights turned off. As soon as I stepped on the brake pedal they came back on. My brake lights did not light up. Also, it would not shift out of park, and stepping on the brake pedal would not cancel the cruise control any more.

That's about all I know. Sorry if it doesn't help in your case.

Above the brakepedal, inside of the car. ;)

I had the same problem on an S class W220. Does your cruise control work?
As soon as I pressed the pedal the abs activated then I got a malfunction message. It was an abs sensor rhf wheel hub.

Thanks.

The symton you mention for the Brake Light Switch relates to the BAS/ESP only. What about the ABS fault indicator light? Is it the same solution by changing the Brake light switch, above the Brake pedal?

Do I need to remove the cover beneath the driver side dash, to access the switch? Also is it safe to remove this swicth & for me to drive to the merc dealer (spare parts dept)?

Kind Regards

Thanks.

I have open the cover beneath the steering column. I have remove the Brake light switch adjoining the Brake pedal.

Now I am quoted by MB dealer AU$51, which is dearer than US$20. I will look for spare parts dealer with more reasonable price $$ on www

I had just removed the Brake Light Switch & decided to test it by puting it back again. Guess what, the 2 Faulty Indicator is no more. Is it possible the swicth is working again?

I drove for half hour in light traffic, made a number of turns left & right, even reverse. The fault signal is no more.

But I will keep the cover beneath dash open for another 2 weeks & hopefully its 100% confirm that the fault is fixed.

Kind Regards

You may not see the problem again for 3 - 6 months but, chances are it will come back. ;)
Btw. I was quoted $ 21.00 Canadian ( about $ 19.00 US ) by my dealer.
