At the shop, the news so far...

Hey guys, I got my car towed to an indy mechanic today. So far $100 dollars in towing bills alone, to my house then repair shop. This Indy mechanic is a certified Audi specialist, and says he's comfortable with mercedes also. The indy mechanic just called me and told me that my starter is dead and he thinks although my battery powers the car up its failing aswell.

He told me to go with a brand new starter and not to play games and blame him when the rebuilt starter dies again in a year. But at 600 dollars I don't feel like its worth it. What do you guys think? So i told him all i can afford is a rebuilt starter for which mercedes still wants $500 bucks for. I plan on ordering my starter from Autohauz Arizona for a much lower price, but what do you guys think of my desicion to go with a rebuild versus new?

THanks.

I would order a bosch reman. from fastlane (Buy Parts) for $200 and have him install that.

Just my .02

I would be suspicous of him "thinking" the battery is failing...any good mechanic should have the proper equipment to TEST the battery and determine if its bad or not.

Just so you're aware...every bosch reman. altrenator and starter comes with the listed warranty (Ultimate Protection Plan). If you've found the same unit cheaper at Autohauz good luck. I have ordered from Phil in the past and would gladly spend a few extra bucks to get the order right, and know that there is a person on the other end of the phone if I have a problem.

Heres the bosch link:

Hey thanks for sharing that link with me and providing the additional information. I wasn't aware of that, I saw it listed on their site and not on fastlane, I assumed right away there isn't warrenty. They should list it a little better, whenever someone spends more then 100 dollars they would like warrenty, or know its applied to the item. Oh well, my cart is all filled at autohauz now, time to hand over my Visa to them....

thanks

Finally FIXED!

Alrite guys, my car is finally fixed and on the road!
The Car needed a new starter.
I spent $300 US on parts plus 50CDN bucks in taxes
I will get 90 US dollars back for core which costs me $20 dollars to mail,
so total for parts, 350-90+20=280
Parts: $280
Labour from Audi: $275 dollars for 3 1/2 hours. Diag, Change starter, charge battery, test battery.

The Audi mechanic also told me that perhaps my battery is problematic or my alternator as the battery has lost charge since it was charged. I was told that if I use it regularily it'll be fine, but long periods of parking might cause problems. So I sitll have this problem to fix.

The car starts better then ever! But i wonder if i should change my battery now?
