94 E320 ticking sound

There seems to be a light ticking sound that comes on while driving at about 50-80kmph. Mostly on acceleration. I've searched through the forum and all i've goten so far is noisy lifter. But the ticking seems to be coming right from behind the instrument cluster.

Any ideas

jm124, the speedometer cable may need lubricating.

I test drove a 94 E320 a month ago that had the same issue.

Check the trip odometer, is it moving or staying in the same place? Sometimes it gets caught and doesn't fully engage a gear and the ticking sound could actually be a clicking.

jm124, Haasman makes a good point. I've experienced that very thing on our 1992 300CE when my wife failed to "zero" the trip odometer properly when buying gas. If the zeros are not aligned straight across the trip odometer will not register any miles and makes a clicking sound. Only attempt to reset the trip odometer when the car is stopped.

It's not the cable, and if it was, don't lubricate it. Buy a new one.

I vote for the trip odometer. It's happened to me several times.

It is a common comlpait if the trip is set when the car is moving...
Reset it at rest..
