Filler neck leaking W124...need help

This is my second post on this and Im hoping for some good advice!

1992 300D I have fuel leaking from the filler cap....but its not the cap
Mercedes tech says that the filler neck entrance is messed up from the fuel nozzle hanging down on each fillup...this is a normal occurance according to MB tech

Can this be repaired?
Or do I need to buy a new tank

Thanks in advance
Wayne

If the MB dealer tech is aware of this particular problem, what did he recommend as the fix? Seems like he would know the answer.

I have gotten pretty friendly with two of the techs at Park Place Mid cities..
they did a little adjustment to the tabs inside the filler neck and if helped for a while....

But they are the ones that said the only real way to fix is a new tank.....

These are 2 great guys that have saved me hundreds, but they are used replacing parts and not necessarilly fixing or rebuilding. I have rebuilt calipers and assorted parts in the past that they would have simply changed out. Thats why I wondered if anyone had a fix....

I cant imagine what a new tank would cost...

Wayne, the solution may be to see how a new or "good condition" filler neck looks ... take pictures and measurements of same, if needed. Then see if an experienced bodyshop metal tech can work your worn filler neck back into its original shape. I agree that a new fuel tank will not be cheap, let alone the cost to install it.
