W202 Ignition coil question - P0302
 

I recently had my codes read and I have 2 codes, P0300 and P0302. Which as I understand it the # 2 coil. I checked the connections and wiring harness, so I think it may really be # 2 coil - but which of the two coils is # 2? The one on spark plug #2 or the one on spark plug # 4? I read early from a Gilly reply that P0302 is for cylinder 2 and P0301 is cylinder 1, but given this four banger only has two coils. It appears that the number # 2 coil is for cyclinders 1 and 4, and therefore this coil is the one mounted atop of #4 spark plug. Some help would be much appreciated.

My fault, of course most would have figured it out I think since two of mine are four bangers.

Most people will tell you to move the suspected coil, to fire the OTHER TWO cylinders.
If the misfire code moves with the coil, it would verify your suspicion ( defective coil ).

I have inspected the plug holders and they seem fine. I appreciate your help but I do not have the OBD reader here, so I need to figure it out. It seems like a simple question - but I have the Haynes manual and a MB Service manual which have not helped. Actually the MB Service manual indicates that the ignition coil # 2 is for cylinders 2 and 3 - so unless someone else can confirm tonight I will replace the first coil from the front of the engine, which implies cyclinders 2 and 3.

If you look in your Haynes manual ( Section 5B-3 ), you will see the first coil fires # 1 & 4 cylinder, the second coil fires # 2 & 3.
That would make you correct in your assumption. ;)

Umm, I must have missed that.
 

I just changed the plugs out even though they were less than 20K mile on them, and I changed out the # 2 & # 3 cylinder coil. Test drove it, started and stopped several times and it seems to have solved the problem. I also had inspected the wiring harness, etc - it seemed to be the coil so I changed it.
Another MB issue solved! Thanks for this forum!
