Need diagnostic for master/slave clutch prob.
 

Hi all,

I got in my 190e yesterday and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor. I filled the res up (it was 2/3rds low) and pumped like hell. Today, it was stiff enough that I drove it home.

I'm assuming that I have a bad master or slave cylinder, but which one? Is there a test that I can do to determine the bad part?

I would look first for dampness from brake fluid at the clutch master and then the slave. Remove the drivers lower kick panel to expose the pedal assembly and with a flashlight, look up where the clutch pedal connects to the clutch master push rod. Follow that to where it goes into the clutch master. Look around that area for fluid leakage. I would assume that if it looked dry that the problem would be the slave.
I just looked up what the clutch slave looks like on your car. It looks as though you could loosen or completely remove the two mounting bolts and pull the slave back and see if the slave is leaking.

Dan, Just another tip. I don't know how many miles "Victoria" has on her or how long you intend on keeping her but..... If I was going to keep the car and say it was the clutch slave that was the problem, If the master cyl was the origional and wasn't a Kings ransom to buy, I would replace both. Chris

Agree. And do the rubber hose as well. If you are going to have to mess with it, do the whole nine yards.
