Cracked Windshield W140
I have a 1997 s320, with a few rockchips in the windshield.
Today i noticed a large crack extending from the top of the windshield through one of these rockchips, to about halway down my windshield. I was baffled and thought someone may have done this. Could this have devloped from heat? If you feel over it you can't really tell it's there. What do i do from here? Do i have to replace the windshield? Can it be repaired? How much is a windshield for a w140? Any help is appreciated, thanks. |
I had my windshield replaced last fall. It simply cracked from an old surface rock chip at the top of the windshield while I was driving. While driving I heard a "bink" and watched the crack grow during my hour-long trip. Anything is possible, but I don't think anybody was necessarily messing with your car.
My AAA insurance replaced the windshield with an OEM windshield. The total job (deductable and covered amount) was roughly $550. Whether you replace the windshield is a personal decision. I replaced mine because the car is in good enough shape that I didn't want an ugly crack to detract from its appearance. Some star chips, cone chips, and small cracks under a few inches can be repaired without windshield replacement (and no deductable according to my insurance coverage). Success of these repairs varies. I also had a windshield on another car crack from a star rock chip as I was swatting at a mosquito from the inside! Windshield chips and cracks are part of living and driving in SE Michigan. We laugh it off anytime we're looking at used cars for purchase.... "Yup, you can tell from the windshield it's a Michigan car!" |
If you have comprehensive on your insurance just have it repaired or replaced. If you have liability only, you can stop the crack from moving and or repair it yourself. Fixing glass is not rocket science

Call your insurance company. If you have glass coverage they will pick up the tab. Really about the most simple and painless claim.
Btw if you own a W140 you should have glass coverage. I think those side windows are like $500+ each. So if you don't have it, purchase it!:D |
