I've been driving my mom's Honda (she's away), and my godmom's Bimmer for the last week. For the past 2 days, its back to my trusty ole 300SE. My, what a difference.

The most remarkable difference : I dont feel the Benz running. Its as if the road's being pulled from under our wheels!

Back in '96 we took my wife's then new Ford Crown Victoria to Montana back when they had no daytime speed limit. We drove at about 100 mph for well over an hour at a time, and at that time I thought the Crown Vic was pretty quiet and competent driving at that speed. In '99 I picked up an old '73 450 SEL for fifteen hundred bucks. The ancient 450 feels much more comfortable at 100 mph than the Crown Vic. In fact I just drove the 450 from Sacramento to LA and back and it was pleasureable spending 7 hours behind the wheel flogging the antique. It begs to be driven fast. Since then I've picked up two other W116 cars, a 1980 450 SEL and a 1980 300 SD. I can drive three neat old Benzs for the price of a new stripper Escort. Talk about a bargain!

I just got back from a 2500mile trip in my 83 300D and i felt that 80 Mph was the nicest speed to cruise at given there are no high winds like i experenced in Buffalo today! I was all over the road. The diesel drone becomes almost non-existant at 80 and wind noise is remarkably low.

At 80 mph with remarkably low wind noise?

Are you wearing some ear mufflers, or did ya buttress your door edges?

I do everytime i hand wash the cars put Armor-all on all the weatherstrip around the doors. This helps it last longer, keeping it soft. Maybe this helps a little

True about the wind. MBs love to run at speed but the Achilles heel for many models is high wind. My mini-van handles a stiff cross wind better than my W126, and I really hate saying that.

There's always a trade off. In a perfect world.........

i am not sure what yardstick is used to measure
favorable cross wind reaction. But i know my MB
car, and any car i've driven so far would shake
when hit my wind from an on-coming trailer truck,
for example. the shake is more pronounced when
car is not moving.

OK im no expert on aerodynamics.
But this is what i have experienced.
Any car will shake when standing still and a car or truck passes it at speed. When you pass a semi on the freeway, notice how your car will get pushed in the direction away from the truck just slightly when you are near or just behind the front of the truck. This is the massive amount of wind that the truck is pushing away from its sides as it cuts through the air.
Now cross winds matter more than just how aerodynamic the car is. Suspension geometry, wheelbase, weight, tire size, and the condition of the car's front suspension (most importantly the idler arm) are factors. I just had everything replaced on the front suspension-steering except the tie-rods and my benz was getting pushed around by the wind far more than i expected. MY WRANGLER gets pushed around less. When i tried correcting the steering to compensate for the wind i looked behind at my tail end and noticed how the rear end floated around rather wildly when i did so.
Id have to say with the case of the 123s that its shape and suspension geometry are the greatest culprits to its high wind problems.

I spent one month and $$$ to improve the windnoise of the W126.

This included:

1. Extra padding on the doors and WURTHed around, just so I FEEL pyschological good that a little wind can't seem through the microbes of the door metal. But seriously, more so to cover any tiny gaps that may be present, what with the panel clips etc..

2. Changing of the interior velvet felt of all four windows.

3. Changing the rubber seals on all 4 doors.

4. Realignment of the doors for maximum shutting.

5. Tightening of the doors for mximum closure.

6. Changing of boot rubber seal.

7. Padding of boot, and extra wrapping of the back panel for reduction of road noise and possible back-wind sipping in.

8. Extra seal on the windscreen.

9. Lamination of all 4 doors' windows to cut out the 0.01 % of windnoise ... and resealing of the side mirror rubbers.

Thats more or less all that was done.

Joel - after all the time we spent on eliminating the wind noise, it had to!

FYI - this is how we detected the affected areas, i.e. of evident wind noise.

We used musking tape to tape all the window corners, i.e. where the rubber seal is located by the window. We needed some to help us tape, thus not possible to do it alone. Its better to tape all 4 doors for maximum effect.

Then we took the car at 120 kmp or whichever speed it mattered, and then listened. If there was no wind noise, then we would stop and remove section by section. Once removed (in stages) we drove again at the same speed and observe the wind noise.

From there, we were able to know which side of the door was most offensive (so that the moderators could delete the offensive bit).

From our experiment, we found the drivers door to be the most offensive, but were very disappointed the moderators did nothing about it

So, we focused on the door (since the moderators neglected to do something) and got it realinged, tightened, etc. etc. and thus the result was very very much better.

Choose a nice sunny day to do this. You wouldn't want to get out of your car while its storming outside.

Its a Tuesday morning here (used to be A&W's coney dog day).

Have a great day to all, Moderators included.
