Fleece oil filters

Could someone please explain fleece oil filters. What are they made of? When should they or can they or must they be used? Is it only a matter of which engine oil is in use or do some engines need them no matter which oil?

That term is for the "new" generation of oil filter material for engines that MB suggests LONG oil change intervals!

Some type of processed cotton product instead of paper.

MB dealers sell that type of filter for all of the V6 & V8 engines from 1998

Any that will fit 603 motors?

Mercedes Own Summary

Plastic instead of paper - it's the new Mercedes mantra with regards to oil filters. Modern lubricants can cause more rapid degradation of the cellulose (paper) filter in longer drain interval applications. In our new Fleece oil filters, the medium has been replaced with durable polyester, providing greater resistance to degradation.

Four reasons to stay faithful to FLEECE oil filters:

Compatibility. Our filters are compatible with the latest, fully synthetic oils and with mineral oils as well. Genuine Mercedes-Benz Fleece oil filters help ensure optimum engine lubrication, and are a required service item for all 2005 Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

High filtering precision. MB Fleece filters can remove particles as small as 0.005 millimeters which means cleaner oil is circulated through the engine, it’s an excellent replacement for the paper filter in pre-2005 models.

Durability. The new, highly durable filter medium provides greatly improved protection against material degradation and deformation from hot oil - even under the most difficult operating conditions.

Easy servicing and installation ensured. Only the vehicle manufacturer can work from the original vehicle drawings in developing replacement parts. Other manufacturers have to engage in guesswork in determining the tolerances for the oil filter system. Deviating from our exact dimensions and materials may cause installation problems or internal filter bypass leakages.

What's correct part #?

What is the correct part # for the fleece filter for an '05 C230.

000 180 26 09 as stated in the FASP manual is obviously not the correct one. It is too big for the filter assembly.

Thnaks.

The filter called out for my 2002 C230 coupe is traditonal paper. I think the fleece filters are only used in the V6 and V8 angines. Of course I could be wrong. Try calling the dealer or Phil if you have any doubts.

Yeah I have all but given up on the fact that it exists for the M271. I've been to the dealer, they say they only have the paper version on file for this engine.

It just ticks me off that they "sell" their customers on the idea of going longer 'tween oil changes. A lot, a lot of people don't even read their manuals other related materials and take their word for it. Which yeah is maybe truly the customers' fault. BUT, MB shouldn't pushing this idea, then hide in their product manuals that you need use 229.5 oil WITH fleece filters in order to take advantage of the long intervals tween oil changes. Then turn around put a sticker on the engine hood to use fleece filters...but not even sell the d-mn filter.

I'll just stick to my old method of ev' 5k miles for the change.

"Fleece" oil filters

Manufactured under subcontract from Mobil (Exxon Mobil) to Champion Labs
for: Mercedes
'Same filter element (and casing) of Mobil1's oil filters available @ Autozone.
Synthetic Element filters down to a ridiculously small particulate size (GOOD).

I don't know if any of the Mobil1 element casings will fit "Right On" your filter
shaft on the Mercedes... But I'd sure: 1.take an old filter by AZ to compare
"Twist and Threads". 2. 'Get Champion's telephone number from Mobil Tech
Support and ask them.

Went to Mobil1's wesite. They refer to a Fram & Purolator filter which are both paper elements. While Mobil1 makes extended life filters..they are all spin-on types. The one for W203 is simply the element that fits in a canister housing.

Like I said, I don't think there is one out yet for this engine.

Thanks anyway.

oil filter

J K P,

N.A.M.B. will never retro-engineer the synthetic filter setup for a "drop in"
application(no financial incentive) We must remember that to New Jersey
we are cheapskates for NOT replacing the entire car with a new model
every six months.N.A.M.B. is dragged kicking and screaming to the concepts
of longevity and durability by the "Gnomes of Sindelfingen".

'Shows my ignorance.(about your model# and engine#) I assumed that you
already had the "Spin On" type filter setup.

I am in the same boat (drop in filter element)
I'm researching retro-fitting a "Spin on" filter head ,which would allow use of the
Mobil1 spin on oil filters. Space and road debris security are a couple of the
considerations.M.B.'s O.E. setup has the oil thermostat inside the oil filter
housing [opens at appropriate temp to oil cooler feed + return lines],Which is
another hoop to be jumped through.
'Would involve the O.E. setup as primary and the synthetic "spin on" as
secondary;IF oil pressure is not negatively effected.
(These engines last hundreds of thousands of miles with the O.E. setup
;BUT I've never had anyone suggest the oil can be too clean.)

That's just my point I made earlier. It "should not" be a retrofit. All their media info & even the car itself states to use the fleece/synth filter. For them to turn around and not even provide the part is ludicrous.
