TRANNY TECHS?: Slipping vs Flaring??
 
99% of what I've driven has been manual. SOOO... whould some automatic entheusiast compare and contrast

'Flaring' refers only to automatic transmissions and is the situation where the engine revs increase DURING an upshift whilst accelerating. (ie...'During' being the period between leaving one gear and entering the next)

That is what I was guessing, I've always heard THAT called "slipping" - as in what a worn out clutch does.

What I consider slippage is shutter or missing into the next gear which can also result in what can be thought of as flaring.

At times flares are caused by poor line pressure.
