what is the average temp for a Benz?
I just bought a 1997 C280 with 76,000 miles. the service history didn't show that it had an overheating problem. but with all my cars, I like to start refreshing everything so I just changed the thermostat and a hose this morning. my belts are tight, the fan seems to purr fine but I stil get a reading of 90-95degrees. Is that normal for the Benz because I want to keep this one and if overheating is an issue for Mercedes, I need to work on a plan B.
Any info is appreciated. benz rider |

see picture below, between the two redmarks is average, it is not uncommon to go above the upper mark which is 100 on hot days with a/c on, both are celcius |

That's hardly a problem at all! In fact, it's not even a problem...

The experience I have had on my '00 C230K is that the needle is always at or ever so slightly above the 80c line. It rises slightly in stop-and-go traffic with the A/C running.
If it's between 95 and 100c and you're at highway cruising speeds, that seems to me like it's high, and it shouldn't be that high. But perhaps the M104 runs warmer than my M111 does - not sure. I had a 190E with the 2.6 M104, and I never experienced operating temperatures at those levels though. A little warm for my comfort .... -Michael

My '96 E320 always runs between 92-98 C (depending on old or new thermostat)

My 85' 380SE sometimes goes beyond the 100*C mark if the outside temperature is above 85* and I am in city driving. I need to change my coolant I am sure, because it is the green coolant. Also need to check the fans.
