Today I was looking at an old M.B. and saw that it had a DOHC straight six in it. Would it be a W116? Is this a good engine? Can it be built up to produce good H.P.? Any info would be very appreciated. Thanks, Will.

How old? The M110 was around for a while even down to a carb'd version. It's a hot lil motor, the Euro one REALLY scoots in a W123.

It tends to leak oil around the top where the head bolts together and you'll need to adjust the valves on it.

any older benz with a dohc engine is a 110.

the 110 280 motor is generally aknowledged to be about bulletproof by benz mechanics. pretty equal to a 616 diesel. prob better than a 617 (in that the head gaskets dont blow at 275k miles).

nice running and powerful too especailly in euro trim.

Now that you mention it, I think it had an intake for a spread bore four barrel. Do you have any idea what the displacement on it would be? What's the most H.P. I could get out of it?

Hrm, I think the one I saw was a '72 model MB. 280C or something, it was a small sedan. Yeah, it had a Q-jet sittin atop.

2.8L is what this one was, not sure on the HP. 150 maybe?

yes there was a qjet clone carb on the early ones. with out looking at my books 150 is prob about right for a carb euro version. for an injected version the euro was 185. i have one of these and it is strong when running correctly. mine is under overhaul from a po who let it flood.

with the right euro cams and pistons a carbed version would prob approach the injected one on power.
