240D MB Speedometer Issues

The Speedometer in my 1982 240D MB 4spd is having issues. The odometer stopped working and the speedometer starting bounding so I sent the speedometer off and had it repaired and it worked correctly for about 8K miles and the speedometer has started bouncing again. It seems to work correctly up to about 40 mph and then no matter how fast I go it will not read much past 65 mph.

I just installed a brand new speedometer cable last night thinking that should take care of the problem, but it did not! I’m till having the same issue with the bouncing and it not reading correctly at higher speeds.

What do you all thing the problem is? Is it the speedometer in need of repair again or do I have issues with the gear in the transmission or is there something else I'm overlooking? If you think it is the gear, how is that fixed and is it something I would want to take to repair shop or could I do it myself?

By the way I found an old Q&A from this forum that give me all the details I needed to replace the speedometer cable including the 10mm wrench to remove it from the transmission.

You guys are AWESOME!

My guess would be the speedometer, again. These speedos tend to be a little flaky, and I can't imagine a cable problem that would cause these symptoms. I would contact the person who repaired the speedo last time, hopefully they will fix it free.

I wonder if I should try to have this one repair again or try to find a used one?
