Buying Decision 2000 E320 4matic Wagon
Hey guys I need some advice. I came across a 2000 e320 4matic wagon with 156,000 miles on her. I have been looking for one because I sold my 91 e300 4matic. I can buy her for 9,000 dollars. The dealer has had it on his lot for some time 4months. People are scared of the mileage. The car is in good condition for the mileage. Some things that I noticed. The steering wheel cover has lost some of its threads needs replacing. Needs shocks. Vanity mirror passenger side cover needs replacing. Minor stuff. Car runs strong.
My question is how long can this car go for and what do you think??? I fix all my cars and have done a ton. Is this car a reliable body type 210. Please let me know what you thik??? Thanks George |

Transmissions fail at 251,458.9 km and engines at 357,566.4 km.

From what I understand, the 4 Matic version is not subject to the spring perch problems. I dunno about other issues, balancer, engine harness, head gasket, transmission, etc. There have been discussions about these issues but I have not followed them as I don't have a 210 except in my dreams. My understanding it that a late model 4 Matic wagon is quite a desirable car.

Be very cautious with a purchase like this. Even though the car is only 6 years old, this is serious mileage. If it was owned/maintained by a very anal previous owner who made sure that everything was maintained properly and fixed every little anamoly that popped up then you may be able to pat yourself on the back 4 years from now on what a great car this has been. If not, be prepared to do all the things the previous owner(s) failed to do. If you can't confirm (through inspection or records) that a wear-and-tear item has been recently replaced/repaired, be prepared to foot the bill! (Flex disks, AMM, compressor, lower control arm bushings, etc, etc.!) Some of the most expensive used MBs are the ones that cost the least. Do your homework and make sure someone that knows these cars inspects it.
Good Luck, Dan

My 2 cents. I am not going to buy any MB beyond 1995 without a warranty.
I have no car payments, but have recently been contemplating modernization. The car you are considering could be a tremendous money pit. Furthermore, the expenditures may come in spurts. This can be difficult to handle. You could burn through many thousands in a car as complex as this one. Many computers, steering rack, sealed transmission (has the fluid been changed? If not then it will look like brown syrup. Big bucks.) Must be a reason for the $9,000 price. Want a good wagon? Find a '95 with lower mileage and maintenance records. Steve '92 300E Sportline 242K |

This vehicle does not have rear shocks.
Instead, it has rear hydraulic self-leveling units. They last a very long time. Replace only when leaking and then only the one that's leaking.

I'm doing my research for the purchase of the exact same car this autumn when my wife goes back to work from maternity leave. Forp's point about service records is the key, as far as I am concerned. 2000 MY cars were still very early in the flexible service schedule fiasco, and the owner may have actually believed MB when they said he never needed to change the transmission fluid. Finding a car you're happy with and spending $2 or 3K more on it may save you thousands more than that over the life of the car. That car has had a tough life, racking up nearly twice the mileage per year that the average car accumulates. No service records should equal no sale. And have it PPI'd by a mechanic you trust, who knows MBs. |
