1980 240D glove compartment
I recently purchased from a private owner a restored 1980 240D. I would like to repair the glove compartment door since I haven't been able to find parts. The problem is that after I push the lock to the right to release the latch, I must manually pull the lock back to the left and manually reset the latch so it will engage the strike. This isn't really a burden except, the key will only turn in the lock if it is to the right (e. i., open) and it will not turn when the lock is in the left position, which it must be to close the latch. If anyone could give me some advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Though I have wanted a Mercedes all my life, this is the first opportunity that ever presented itself, and I am delighted. I have a Haynes technical manual and look forward to doing some work on the car myself. By the way, my thanks to mercedesshop for your great prices and exceptional service on some parts I just received.

There's a little nub on the back of the black plastic glove box door backing that is probably broken off. It really can't be repaired right, but can be rigged to work a little better. It's probably just best to buy a new one. I had to replace the glove box door backing on mine. Cost was about $20. It works great now. The part number stamped is on the part.

Thanks
Len,
Thanks for the advice. I rather expected that would be the case. I just need to find the parts I need. "Glove compartment" doesn't get me any returns at the parts sites I"ve tried so far. Mike |
