87 420 sel dies every 3 minutes

My 1987 420 sel just started dieing every 2-3 minutes like clockwork. Coughs once and dies. Starts up again immediately. 200k miles on 8cy engine. I tried 2 used fuel pump relays from a wreaking yard and no difference. Just dies as if out of gas - all other systems are fine. I replaced all fuses also. Any help?

Check your spark, and amp your fuel pumps. Pull the fuel pump relay off and use an amp meeter to bridge pins 7 and 8 for the fuel pump relay, start the car and check amperage. If it is over ten, replace the fuel filter and check again, over ten agin replace pump. Check your spark though. Use an induction typ timing light.

The filter is right behind, and beside, the rear passenger wheel. Jack up the car, remove the rear wheel, depressureize the fuel system and replace the filter.

Smile Problem Solved - Thanks To Everyone

Thanks everyone - replaced the filter and the car runs again. Still can't figure out why the engine died at 3 minute intervals though - seems strange to me. I couldn't have done it without your help so thanks alot!
