1997 E300D rack & pinion problem
The seals on my 1997 E300D rack & pinion unit blew out for some unknown reason causing the PS fluid to leak. Any suggestions as to the cause and can the seals be replaced or does this require a new unit? knigg

Same thing happened to mine.
My neighbor, who is a techinician at a Mercedes dealer, tells me while not common, he does see this from time to time. You can have yours rebuilt by a rack and pinion shop, purchase a factory rebuilt unit from the dealer, or purchase a brand new unit from the dealer. I believe the dealer rebuilt units run about $1,800, and come with a one year warranty, which is the same as a brand new unit.

If it is the torque kind of banjo bolts (best way to discribe) it what is leaking, you can put a new seal on it and be done.
