Question regarding difference in new expansion tank for 300e

Hello,

Its very hot here in TX right now, so whenever I come home I pop the hood and raise it up to help the engine cool down faster, wait around for about 5 mins, then close it and go inside the home... I cringe at the idea of turning the engine off and letting it raise its temps to 100C without running.....

I noticed one day that my expansion tank was wet near the area where the cap connects to the neck.

I bought a new one and it arrived yesterday... I noticed one key difference...

This new one does not have a connector at the very top of the tank for a cooling connection...

I traced the line that is missing on my new tank... The old tank has it run from the very top of the tank through a rubber hose which connects to a metal hose that runs along the back wall of the engine bay and disappears behind the engine block.

Any help? Did I buy the wrong tank?

Part number is 124 500 17 49

Here is a picture for a better understanding, See the top parts that are in a red square? That is the difference.

I believe the small hoses are for the windshield wiper system heater, for the nozzles I guess? But it seems that the two metal pipes that you can see running along the back of the engine bay go to the brake fluid area. What are they heating?

It seems that the new tank is missing the return line for that system.

Any ideas?

no picture necessary, i know exactly what you are talking about, what i do need is the vin number so i can find the part number for the bottle with that fitting. let me know asap. as i said in post #3 above, it was installed to prevent gurgling to allow air to bypass. was used for very short time.

good, i am happy i was able to help, i have only seen a hand full of 124 models with that type tank.

Rahulio1989300E 06-16-2006 01:54 AM

yeah, very strange, but i think you were right about it serving as an airbypass system... smaller tubes connect with the metal pipes running along the exhaust shield in the picture...

I need to replace this part fast, its starting to bubble around the neck of the bottle and just seems like its very very old, could use a new one as preventative maintainence as well... :-)
