W124 Passenger Airbag Upgrade

Hello,

I couln't find any threads on installing a passenger side airbag in a 1992 300D that did not have one in the past. Can I just purchase a passenger airbag, remove the glove compartment and plug it in or are there a lot of electronics as well?

Thanks,
Jay

This is a bad idea...at least imo...

There are quite a few electronics to deal with, including sensors. That and it isn't a simple retrofit into the empty slot you'd create in the dash after removing the glovebox. Just my 2 cents...

It is more complex than just remove and replace. Passenger airbags in the 300 series were optional starting in 1990. I have investigated the same thing in my '90 300E. A few things I have learned: The lower dash panel is different for the airbag equipped cars; there is a long bolt and an array of brackets, etc. that are necessary to secure the back of the airbag to the cross-member inside the dash; the wiring harness, which connects both airbags, the controller, and each seat belt tensioner in the "B" pillars, is different; the electronic controller - either in the dash under the radio or in the passenger foot well, may or may not be different, I have not yet gotten a definitive answer. I also don't know for sure if the cross-member in the dash is the same or different (shape) in airbag-equipped cars, thus allowing room for the airbag module, bracket, etc. I purchased a used passenger airbag last year and removed the glove box to eyeball the situation. It was then I discovered the difference in the lower dash panel. The glove box door in about 1/2" taller than the faceplate of the airbag. The lower panel can be removed from the dash and replaced with the correct one if you can find one at a recycler. The retainer bracket, bolt and other hardware can either be scavenged from a wrecked car or purchased new from Benz. Retail new is something around $125 at last pricing. The wiring harness is another problem. Removing the original one and replacing it with the 2-bag harness is a good deal of work. At this point I have shelved the project, not knowing if I want to go farther.
