280e euro flywheel question

so i learned a lesson today.

so on my 280e the guy who took it apart at my indies decided it would be a good idea to remove the flyheel and adaptor plate. then inexplicabley decided to remount the flywheel wo the plate. .. but didnt mark the fw.

turns out it is NOT neutrally balanced (yeah yeah yeah.... i am eating crow on this one!).

so there is an extra weight bolted onto the front counter weight on the #1 clylinder crank throw. we figure the heavy side of the flywheel will match that if we can figure it out.

so anybody know if we are thinking right?

we are hoping to avoid taking the crank out and sending it to the balancers. about 8 to 10 hours work.

another plan is to install the engine wo the tranny and run it to see if it is balanced and remove the fw and move it til it is balanced. only 12 possibilities!

anybody tried this one?

No you are not the only one.
I just haven't taken my flexplate off yet.
I just got my M110 oil pan off a few days ago and
I am pulling the crank out sometime this month.
My old factory manual for that job shows an alignment mark on the flywheel and the crankshaft. It states a new flywheel will need to be balanced, but reusing one will need the stamped marks to be aligned.
I would be happy to e-mail you these pages.
Send me a e-mail address.

thank you dr diesel. my machinists sharp eyed 27 year old son found the marks finally. very very faint on the fw, but legible. on the crank it was about like a hologram it was so faint.

so they will button it up tomorrow or monday and my indie will drop it into my 280e.

so the lesson is once again, even though most of the benz fws seem to be neutrally balanced, they may not be. so always mark them when taking them apart and if changing from stick to automatic be sure to check the one coming off the crank for neutrality, and if not the new fw will have to be match balanced as described in the fsm.

so we dodged a bullet here!
