W124- ticking noise in passenger side of dash

Despite its age and mileage, my 88 300E didn't rattle or make any other annoying noises... until recently. There's a fairly loud ticking sound in the passenger side of the dashboard. It never seems to happen in the first 10 minutes of driving following a cold start. Once the car is warmed up, the ticking is usually there, but it sometimes goes away for a while for no apparent reason.

I'm guessing that the climate control servo/flap inside the right side of the dash might be causing this problem, but I'm not sure.

Has anyone else had this problem with their W124? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Dave M.-

Does it sound like relays clicking randomly or is it a rhythmic tick? Maybe the aspirator motor for the cabin temp sensor sucked in some debris or maybe the aspirator motor is off position (happened to me).

My 94 E320 had the same symptom; it was the air sampling motor for the climate control system. Do a search for my write-up describing removal and replacement. Not very difficult if you have small hands.

It might be a bomb. You don't know anything you're no supposed to know, do you?

Thanks for the suggestions.

The ticking sound is rhythmic. I'll remove the glove compartment & check out that air sampler fan/motor.
