I have heard a rumor that '98 model ML 320s can experience a blowup of the harmonic balancer that takes a bunch of other stuff out with it. Is this a fact or just a rumor? If it is true can it be caught before the big event, what signs should be watched for? What needs to be changed out to prevent the big bang?

I will say that if I owned a 98/99 model year M112 V-6 it would have the modified front pulley/balancer. List price is around $65. Not just ML's but all V-6s.

Thanks for the reply. Can the balancer be changed out in the vevicle? and what special tools are needed for the job? It has been 25 years since I was employed servicing MB vehicles, a lot has changed, but I am still happy to work on my own vehicle, especially if it saves me big dollars.

All V6s?

Pat,
Are you saying that anyone with a V6 built in 98-99 should change the balancer? How about a 98 C280 and how can one identify the balancer that should be updated to the newer style?

This question has been lingering in my mind ever since I read the thread. I still would like to know for sure whether it's a real problem. I haven't heard or seen anyone with this problem yet, but it still bugs me. Sorry to bring back an old topic. Just what is it that makes the harmonic balancer suspect and does this apply to the M113 as well?

Kuan
