On our 89 190e, theres a grommetted hole in the middle of the air filter housing. it goes through the bottom and gives access to some sort of set screw (on the throttle body?) does anyone know what this is for and what is missing? it doesn't seem right that the air that travels through there does not get filtered.
thanks all! |
Models with KE-Jetronic fuel injection have that hole in the air cleaner. The hole allows access to the idle mixture screw within the mixture control housing. I've never seen one with a cover. I've never thought to check if it allows air inside the filter.

Hole in Air Cleaner top doesn' t leak dirt
The access hole in the air cleaner --- is for access to the 'mixture adjustment' on CIS fuel injection, and does not 'connect' with the filtered air passage. This is a sealed tube passing THROUGH the air cleaner, and no unfileterd air gets into the engine.

Well, I guess that I should feel stupid! I thought I was missing a bolt so I put a piece of black tape across it :D

thanks for your input guys. kebowers, so there is supposed to be a tube that is fitted through the holes that will still allow access to the mixture screw?
