86 300E reference sensor

I recently installed a new reference sensor in my flywheel area and started my benz. I heard something clicking, turned it off and took the sensor out, then noticed that the end of the sensor was mauled by a nob on the harmonic balancer Why did this happen it was installed in the same place the old one was I cant figure what the problem is any advice would be greatly appreciated.
