Unhappy 1992 300CE Ignition Module...help!!

Hello,

I am having trouble locating an ignition module for our 1992 300CE. The car starts and runs but then there is a catastrophic failure with no warning, the idiot lights do not indicate a problem. The car must then sit for about two minutes before it will restart, but once on the road again, the problem continues. We have pulled the ignition module and re-applied dialectric grease to make sure the contacts were good and solid, but alas...the same problem.

I have been searching all over the country as the Ignition module on the car is 013 545 8332, and we are told that the only module that supercedes the one in the car is 016 545 0432. Unfortunately, I can not locate this one, and the only new one from the dealer is $2995.00. I have been told by a few Mercedes enthusiasts that there are eight other modules that work, but at the same token, I am told by others that only that one module will work.

Any help or insight that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated, since our car is now a very expensive paperweight in the driveway!!

Thanks

That seems to be a developing problem on that car. And apparently MB doesn't even have any of them - been on back order for some time. You'd think at that price they would keep them in stock. You might try www.4Mercedes.com / remanufactured parts / EZL.

eacogirl, I've got the same predicament with our 1991 300CE and have been trying to acquire a new ignition control module in Europe via a friend of my son. I do know that 010 545 9532 is a suitable replacement because we have three 300CE's and I scavenged that module so our daughter could use her car. I've been searching for months for a salvage module. When we first experienced the problem new ones, if you could get one, were selling for $1,500. It's discouraging to hear that since then the price has doubled.

Possible Source

If you can't find (or afford) a new one --

Try Potomac German Auto - BIG RECYCLER - I've always had good luck there (Not a plug really, they just happen to be up the road from me.)

I have to ask -

Have you absolutely positively tracked this problem to the ignition module? It has the same symptoms as a flakey fuel pump relay.
