A very useful guide, indeed for those whose models years are mentioned. But a pity the older models 1986 on down are ignored.

Does anyone know what capacities are specified for 300 SD T/D 1980/85, especially those, such as mine, with an R4 Harrison Model #320 Compressor ?

I've noticed as a rough guide that chassis capacities seem to be very similar and in many cases identical across the board. Witness the W126 (like yours) which takes 48 oz. R12 and 7.75 oz. mineral oil for both the 560SEL and 420SEL. I have a 380SE and recall reading somewhere in this forum that the capacity is 48 oz. and I used that figure in calculating my R134a charge over the weekend. It's just nice seeing printed confirmation.

EDIT: I did a typo - the actual capacity is 46 oz. or 2.875 pounds.

what is the correct refrigerant capacityfor R12 in a w126? (R4 compressor)

i have seen;

1) on the red sticker on top of the radiator-3.3lbs
2) FSM cd-1800 grams-2.87 lbs
3) my indy's snap on cd - 3.5 lbs
4) this forum 2.2 lbs

this is a big difference! anyone?

Option #2 is the correct one (2.87 lbs), see my post above. I think the confusion comes in when cans of refrigerant are sometimes called a "pound" when in fact they only contain 10, 12, or 14 oz. of refrigerant. Also, in your search on this forum, you may run into calculated capacities of R134a, which are around 80% of R12 capacity in a converted system (could be your option #4).

I really have no idea. I would just go by the numbers in the guide - they are pretty consistent with what I have seen here.

If you're filling with R12, you can use the sight glass as an effective method of gauging your charge. Just fill up until it's almost clear, with just a few bubbles floating past. You want to avoid a "foamy" appearance in the glass.
