1990 190E 2.6 M103 - Replacing Vibration Damper / Harmonic Balancer
The vibration damper disc behind the crankshaft pulley has worn and rattled loose. I have ordered a new one and taken the old one off. The vibration plate held on by the hub seems ok so I am only replacing the metal vibration absorber disc that has rubber on the back of it.
When putting on the new damper disc, the timing marks are on the rubber part of it, and a little metal pointer that I think triggers the TDC sensor is also on the metal part of the disc. When replacing the disc - Do I have to set the engine to TDC by removing camshaft cover, distributor cover and then line everything up? And then finally line the marks on the damper disc with the TDC sensor before tightening the pulley on? There is no mention in Haynes Manual that you have to set up timing on replacing the damper disc. Please advise. What holds the disc in place - is it just the rubber lip on the back and the pulley that holds it still? |
Update
I have the new damper disc for this now and it turns out the old one had split in two parts hence confusing me. I cannot get one of the old parts off the hub though so may have to remove the whole hub. Any tips?
I have figured out how to set the timing when putting the new disc on though. |
