I have a 1988 190e 2.3. I am thinking of replacing the engine mounts myself. Have any of you ever done this your self in your garage? I have a haynes manual, but just wanted to check you you folks first...

This is probably my next project. You might want to
get CD Rom on your car. Better than Haynes manual. I have
both.

While you are in there might as well replace tranny mount
since you have engine jacked up.

How do you get the CD?

Thank you Gary,
I would love to get the CD-ROM, how did you get it?

Mach,

You can get the CD from PartsShop right here on this website. Try looking through the PartsShop by clicking on the PartsShop tab, or use this link directly

Hope this helps.

Mach,
On the CD see Mike's answer. The big benefit is that you can print out the sheet that you need to do the work. No more soiled manuals. :)

Changing motor mounts is not complicated. One bolt in the bottom and one bolt in the top of the motor mount. Unscrew the bolts, lift the engine a little, exchange the motor mount...

jack engine up

I am going to do the motor mount tranny mount work myself also. Was wondering when I go to jack up the engine, where is the best place to position the jack...I am afraid to put the weight on the oil pan even with a wood block to protect it somewhat.

If I were you I would try an All-data subscription
I paid the 200 dollars for a CD for my 300E and it was the biggest waste ever. Full of bugs(Mercedes acknowledged the bugs) and was very incomplete for a pre '93 W124. BTW, I have supported the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan, if done with care, it will work without harm.

The motor mounts on this car is a piece of cake. You have no problem jacking upthe engine on the oil pan with a piece of wood. Loosen the mounts, support the engine remove the bolts, jack up the engine, remove the mounts. Installation is the reverse.
By the way, an excellent manual for maintenance and repair is the Haynes MERCEDES-BENZ 190E manual. You can get it at Pep Boys, Auto Zone, or Trak for 12.95. It has a lot of procedures illustrated. Don't buy your parts there, buy them here. They will come quickly, the quailty is excellent and you will be charged a fair price, if not the best price.

You may want to disconnect the radiator hoses, the old radiator neck on the older model cars may crack when you lift the engine.

Will Engine tip to the side?

I was concerned that the if you support the engine with one wood block under the oil pan, that it will want to tip to one side or the next, causing it to rest one engine mount.

Do it gently

center the jack and block and do it gently, it wont tip, besides, we are talking about moving it up only a few inches.

First off, you will want to use a wide enough piece of wood to support most or all of the bottom of the oil pan. This is just to distribute the weight a little.

Second, you'll need to undo all the mounting points at the front. Look for anything that would limit the travel at the front. Since you're going to lift the engine up less than an inch. It won't be going anywhere far. You just need enought room to slide the mount out.

And yes, the service CD is invaluable. As opposed to the haynes, which covers many things superficially, and other things not at all.
