E420 question (pic)
Can someone please tell me what the fan in the right wheelwell on my 1995 w124 E420 is for?
I´ve noticed that on similar models (E420 1993) the the plastic over the fan is different. http://homepage.mac.com/gunnarthor/....4EEC9111DA.jpg |
Based on the location I would think that it is for the oil cooler. I have never seen an electric fan fitted over the oil cooler on a 124 model. Perhaps it is a rare factory fit accessory or it is a country/climate specific fit.
99% speculation, 1% hunch  |

I´d really appreciate if someone could give me info on this matter. |
I have a '94 E420, and I do not recall ever seeing such a fan. What sits in front of it?

Isn´t there a fan on the left side of your ´94? - on the one´s I´ve seen there is a similar fan cover on the left side but it´s more in-line with the wheelwell. |
I just looked again the other day while hunting down a gas leak. No fan on the passenger side wheel well.
I'm curious as to what this fan of yours is for. |

But on my E420 there´s no cover in the front of the left wheelwell, which I´ve seen on other w124´s. |
This is the view in the left front wheelwell of my E420. As you can see there's no cover at the front (as I've seen on other models).

That's pretty much a mirror image of my passenger side well.

Now that I got the blower regulator fixed, definitely! :)

Well, I did a little research on your photo and I discovered the particular fan in the photo was fitted to European models, optional equipment or not I could'nt say. I don't have a clue as to how the fan and shroud would have appeared from the factory because I have only worked on US models. The thought behind the fan (IMO): Imagine traveling at 200 kmh for 45 minutes to 1 hour, the engine oil is going to get hot. After sustaining high engine speeds for prolonged periods of time and then the vehicle slows down to the speed of inner city traffic the oil may require some extra cooling, hence the added fan. I would suspect that it is controlled by a temperature switch. The switch may be located on the oil filter housing or on one of the oil cooler hoses.

So are you saying that the US models do not have this fan? |
