Control Arm Replacement

I got new tires on my 94 s500 with 165k today; the guy said he couldn't do the alignment because the Left Upper and Left Lower Control Arm, and Right Upper Control Arm had to be replaced. Prior to coming in I had noticed a clunking "dry metal noise" coming from the front wheel area. The mechanic called me into the workshop and started pulling/turning the wheel manually, reproducing the sound from the control arm. He said that there was no grease left between the connections and that it was completely dry. I just went onto Thebenzbin.com and under suspension, I can buy new control arms for $217 each or get the "Control Arm Bushing Kit" for $90. Do you guys think that the bushings are sufficient, regrease and reconnect because that is where the wear seems to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At dealer labour, would be worth buying the arms...independent, would buy the bushes....equaly as effective.

Mercedes does the best job of alignment with the correct spreader.

About 2 hours a side for bushes....... ish .

Replace the upper arms, the lower bushings, check the sway bar links, align it and forget the notion of greasing anything under there. Grease has no place when your parts are up to snuff and properly installed.

Are you doing the work yourself?

Looking at the listing for the parts, it appears that the lower C/A comes with the bushings installed, but not the ball joints. Are you going to be able to press the ball joints in yourself?

Regardless, I'd recommed replacing the lower/right C/A (or just the bushings and ball joint) while you're at it. Then you're good for another 10 years/150k miles. It would stink to have to replicate some labor, and re-allign the front end in 12 months because you have a bad ball joint or bushing on that right/lower C/A.

I also replaced the tie rods on mine when I did the front end. As I recall, the parts were about the same price as an allignment, so it made sense to me to replace everything at one time.

Good luck.

Problem turns out to be the Sway Bar links, both sides were badly worn. I don't know if NTB was just trying to make a ton of money off me, everything else looked alright according to my mechanic. The clunking front end sound is totally gone. Luckily the problem was found out before the link broke...
