Does anyone know where to get a door speaker for a 1990 300E? I posted in the audio section, but had no response. From the looks of things, most in this section are really into high end stuff that requires modifications to fit. I really want to keep my door pod unmodified (no cutting). I tried the parts shop here, but they didn't have one.

Interesting thing is that when I removed the faulty speaker, it really seemed to be well constructed (has a rubber surround instead of foam which would have been disintegrated by now). I got a new Aiwa Cdmp3 player (nothing like 150+ songs on 1 cd!) and it stopped working soon thereafter. But...it didn't burn out the speaker as I originally suspected it would have. Instead, the braided wire simply broke next to the cone (too close to fix). I wouldn't mind putting in an aftermarket set, but I can't find anything at the different speaker manufacturer's sites that has the proper dimensions to fit without cutting. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure what the proper name for this type speaker is (mid-woofer maybe?) but it's appears only for bass.

You probably didn't get an answer because this is a tough one! MB/Becker really loves off size speakers with non-standard impedence that nobody makes other than themselves! If the speaker is EXACTLY 6" and designed to work with a Becker amp, then about your only choice that I know about (without cutting or custom work) is to order an MB speaker from your dealer, or pull one out of a parts car at a salvage yard. Either way, there may be an audible difference between your remaining original speaker and a new/used one due to aging factors.

Depending on the price from the dealer for a replacement speaker, there is another option. Ignore the door speakers, and buy one of the self amplified Blaupunkt CMS-265 mid/subs to put under your seat. (Does your Aiwa have sub out jacks? Low frequency filters for the front and rear?). I don't know how your Aiwa is hooked up, but if you are running the existing 6 speakers off the 4 speaker outputs on the head unit then bypassing the door speakers will give you a bit more power to the remaining 4, especially if you can hook up to the sub out, and cut the lows to the stock speakers. http://www.continentalimports.com/bl_speak_spec.html

Another possibility would be to have the speaker rebuilt or re-coned. There is a place in Seattle where I’ve taken blown speakers to be rebuilt. I'm all but sure that there is at least on such place in every major city. Cost is reasonable and you get an essentially new speaker out of the deal.

Have you tried the obvious? Check with Fastlane or Mercedesshop and see what their price is for the exact oem replacement.

I'm not looking to get flamed by the audiophiles out there, but the front dash speakers on my '91 300TE 4m were < $30 apiece when I priced them. I think this was from either Fastlane or benzbin. You know they will fit and I'm not sure why anybody needs a 5 MW system in a car. The premium sound package that came on the 4matics has always been plenty for me. I even turn the bass down from the normal setting because it gives me a headache at the normal settings.

Thanks Mike. I think you and I think alike as far as the sound goes. The factory speakers sound fine to me although I replaced the factory stereo. I did try PartsShop and Fastlane -- no luck though. I think that I may try and get both speakers re-coned as one of the other posters suggested. Either that or see if my local dealer can help.

I now remember that I had priced the speakers at the Annapolis MB Dealer. Give your local dealer a call, he may surprise you.
