M110, valve settings?

Hello all,

I just picked up a '79 280S with the nice M110 motor! Anyway, I know this has valves to be adjusted such as my 617 so I am in need of the valve lash for this motor...

Also, are there special wrenches required to do this?

Thanks! :D

m110 valve adjustment

Hi, to adjust the valves you wont need any special tools, just remove the spring retainers and use a 17 flat wrench. the valve lash by factory are 0.10mm for the inlet and 0.25mm for the exhaust, but i found the engine run much quiter when you take the exhaust down to 0.20mm

remember to change the valve cover gasket, as the rubber rings around the plugs will most likely be finished.

BTW what color is your w116 and what miles, i suppose its a euro, what about some pics especially of the engine:)

This one is a blue exterior with a velour creme interior. Very clean. ~125K only. It is a Euro model, I have to get some of those lights back on there.

Purchased from the guy who's friend was the original owner, the cat I purchased from is a client of my mothers.

I have to get it over to my pad here before pictures. It's a pretty slick ride. I have to drain the old fuel, find a rebuild kit for that Solex, pick up a new battery, etc before I drive it.

My SDL has hyd lifters and those started in '86, also the M103 was a hyd lifter motor too... BUT all the M116/7s I have seen are hyd lifter too in the S-class.

For what it's worth, my BMWs have adjustable valves too. I think they did away with those in about '94

One deal with the vehicle, the OE Solex needs some work. :(

I know this unit is a big PITA and so I've pondered about converting it to FI. I know where a complete 280E is (four speed manual car) so that's not the issue. Just wondering what I'd be getting into going that route...

Just an update for anyone, I found the Solex kit at ********az. $61.

Continuing the M110 Valve Adjustment Discussion

I've done this job several times on the OM617 but never on the twincam (which I've just acquired). So as I am looking under the valve cover, I am a bit puzzled as to how one 'locks' the adjusters after the proper valve lash is obtained? Or is this unlike on the diesel engine and one just adjusts the 17mm nut until the correct clearance is gotten and leaves it at that? :( Thanks in advance.

the adjusters have an interference fit on the threads so they will stay where put. you are supposed to check the torque required to move them to be sure they will stay put. i never figured out exactly how to do that though. this was a typical mb valve adjustment back at least to the fintails. it is an overhead cam that works on a rocker. the cam pushes directly onto the middle of the rocker and the pivot point is the ball stud which is threaded. then you adjust the ball stud while checking clearance between the rocker and the cam.

worked fine. beemers and old ferraris have the same system.
