I was wondering... is it possible to use my car's existing cell phone prewiring for an aftermarket cell phone? I know my car has the speakerphone speaker in it (and the mic, I believe). I really want a speakerphone for my cell phone, but cannot find one. I really think this is too complicated, and would be WAY TOO MUCH 'custom' work, but was wondering if anyone has in fact done it, or if anyone thinks it might be possible... Thanks.

(John Shellenberg, can I buy (where?) piezzo buzzers to put on the inside of my car and hook it to the existing alarm module? Thanks.)

MBenz, that is really good to hear!
I have a SAMSUNG 8500. I don't have anything for it yet, but I was thinking I would probably need to buy something, (ie handsfree kit/earpeice & mic)to get a hook-up from the phone itself.
Steve, whenever I think something is possible, it's not, and whenever I think something isn't possible, it is!!
THANKS

I have a Nokia carkit hooked up to the OEM MB speaker, microphone and antenna. The european mobile phone additives in a benz are different as in the states, but if you can get a carkit for that samsung, you could hook it up to some of the OEM mobile phone parts in your car...

What cellphone accessories does your car have?

MBenz,
I know that I have all of the prewiring for the cell phone, and I have the high fidelity speaker in the rear deck used for the cell phone, I can't be sure if I have the mic, I have never seen it, but maybe I do.
So I definitly need to start off with a handsfree kit? I will go out and buy one today.

John,
Is it necessary to put the piezzo buzzers behind the dash?? Can't I mount them somewhere else inconspicuosly?

Steve,
What is my next step?

(I have the prewired cell wiring, including speaker in rear deck, not sure about the mic (I can't visibly see one on the overhead console), I have the big hookup for the cell phone in the trunk behind the drivers side panel, and I have 2 hookups in the center console, one like a regular (American, I don't know if it's different) phone jack, and another 2 (or 4?) prong hook up.

David,

Can you get me some digital pics?

You can mount the piezo siren above the right lower dash panel. There are holes in that panel to let the sound come through.

So what you guys are saying is that the phone in my armrest and above my mirror can only be hooked up to AT&T and Bell? What about Verizon now that they merged?

AT&T, Bell, Verizon?? Are those the GSM operators in your neighbourhood? Are they all on 1900MHz or is one of them on 900MHz? (I have heard that 1900MHz is common for the states and that 900MHz exists in some parts of the country as well)

MBenz,
There are no GSM cariers in the States, only in Europe.
I'm dealing with the same problem as is David, but the setup is diffrent in the E calss. I was wondering if there could be an adapter that plugs right into the phone jack in the center console that would make my Sprint Samsung work like a factory handless ?

Bigshot: I think you can hook up with Verizon.

Hope someone hears my cries, YO

Yury,

Although it has nothing to do with this thread, there are GSM services in the US from Powertel, PacTel, Nextel, and others. The fundementals should be the same regardless of technology, you need to connect to an aux speaker and mic, and finally to an antennae. Today's mobile handsets are great, but I think each one may require a different approach to installation in that they do not share a common standard for speaker output impedence or microphone input level. My thought would be to buy a car kit for the phone of interest, determine the wiring connections, and "splice" it into the existing wiring. Not trivial, but I do not think impossible.

Steve

The only problem for me is that they don't make a Speakerphone for the Samsung 8500, I have looked EVERYWHERE.
Do you think that I can splice the earpiece bud and hook it to the high fidelity speaker? I don't think it will be powerful enough to be used actually as a speakerphone? Maybe if I could wire somehow through the connections in the center console? But I don't know what wire is what?
STEVE, we need help!!

I just want to make sure that this thread does not get shoved down and lost. I really want to do this.
And Steve, I think you are the only one that can help me/us with this! If not, then speak up whoever you are!!

Does anyone have a set of the service amnuals (on CD)? There must be a schematic for the wiring of the factory phone. I went to the Nokia web site (http://www.nokiausa.com/accessoriesphone/1,2524,6185,00.html), and called up a detailed explanation of the car kit. I think everything is there to hook this puppy up. Similar information must be available for other manufacturers car kits. It even indicates that it will work with an external antenna, ignition sensing, and car audio mute. It does not say what the impedence of the external speaker it drives is. so there may be a load differnce tht needs correction.

Don't know if this helps or adds to the confusion, but I intend to give this a try this summer.
