This weekend I removed the camshaft and replaced the lifters and changed the oil. It started fine and is very quiet know, but I still hear lifter noise on occasion. Any clue???
Thanks |

Some lifter noise is usually heard on these engines for some reason. I don't know why. You may have some wear on the cam or the clearance is at the max tolerance. If this is the case, the lifter could be at the top of its adjustment.

How would I go about testing the camshaft for wear? Or do you just replace it? Thanks |

If it runs good, it ain't broke so don't try to fix it.

jgauto,
These engines (OM60x) are famous for lifter noise. Thankfully, my car has never had a problem, but I know of many who have. The bottom line is, the only thing I know of that helps is switching to synthetic oil. I know of more than a few individuals that claim immediate benefits in lifter noise reduction following a switch to synthetic. A few folks, as yourself, reasonably determined that the lifters needed to be replaced, only to have the problem return shortly thereafter.

I actually switched to synthetic and the noise got worse, so I changed back to Rotella 15/40 and it now is only intermittant. I guess I'm just going to have drive it. |

jgauto,
You are not alone in experiencing louder lifters initially when switching to synthetic. Again, I have not had this issue myself, but I do know of one individual who has seven (7!) vehicles with OM60x engines. He strongly advocates the use of synthetics in these engines, but urges owners to be patient, as the true benefits, including noisy lifters, may not become apparent until 20-30kmi following the switch.
